What will your child learn this year?

To build reading skills, these are a few things your second grader will do this year:
  • Read more complex words, such as two-syllable words.
  • Read words with common prefixes and suffixes, for example: pre-, re-, un-, -able, -ad, and -er.
  • Read a variety of texts including fiction, non-fiction, fables, and poetry.
  • Understand the structure of a story, specifically the purpose of beginnings (introducing the text) and endings (concluding the text).
  • Understand the most important details of a text—its main purpose and the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.”
  • Talk about characters’ responses, main events, lessons learned, and important ideas or concepts.
  • Begin to make connections within and between texts.
  • Compare at least two different versions of the same story.
  • Our topics that we will study using a variety of stories are: Schools and Community, Fossils and Paleontology, The secret world of Pollination, and Providing for Pollinators.

To build math skills, these are a few things your second grader will do this year:
  • Adding and subtracting within 100 fluently.
  • Understanding even and odd numbers.
  • Understanding place value up to 1,000 (also being able to add and subtract within 1,000 using place value strategies).
  • Using and comparing standard units of measure, such as inches and centimeters.
  • Creating picture graphs, bar graphs, and number line plots.
  • Counting money and solving word problems involving money
  • Identifying shapes and describing them based on specific traits.
  • Making arrays (ex: 4 columns and 3 rows) and writing a repeated addition sentence.
  • And lots more!!
 
 
To build writing skills, these are a few things your second grader will do this year:
  • Write a variety of types of texts including:
    • Opinion Pieces: Students state their opinions and provide reasons to support them, closing with a conclusion.
    • Narrative Pieces: Students write about an event, describing actions, thoughts, and feelings, and provide a conclusion.
    • Informative/Explanatory Pieces: Students introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a conclusion.
  • Revise and edit writing to improve it.
  • Use digital tools with the aid of the teacher to publish writing.
  • Research topics for shared, group, or class-wide research and writing projects.
 
 
To build Science and Social studies skills, these are the things your second grader will learn about this year:
  • Forces and Motion
  • Earth's different surfaces and the changes that can occur
  • Living things
  • Habitats
  • Sound and Light Energy
  • Geography
  • Economics
  • History
  • Government & Civics
  • Cultures around the World
